Staying Safe & Seen: Navigating the World with Confidence
To travel is to take up space. As Black queer people, our presence in a new city or a quiet landscape is a joyful act of visibility. It’s a continuation of a story that has always existed. We have always been here, on every continent, woven into the fabric of humanity. We are the Two-Spirit people of Turtle Island, the Hijras of South Asia, the Fa'afafine of Samoa, the Muxes of Oaxaca. Our existence is not new, and our desire to see the world is a birthright.
Traveling with the intersections of our identities requires a layer of intention. For many of us, especially if it’s our first time traveling internationally or we’ve just reached a place of financial freedom to do so, the questions can feel overwhelming. How do we move through the world with our joy and safety held in equal measure?
The answer lies in preparation and awareness. It’s about building a framework of confidence so you can immerse yourself in the magic of discovery.
1. Knowledge is Power: Your Pre-Trip Homework
Confidence begins before you leave home. The most powerful tool you have is information.
Understand the Landscape: The global landscape of LGBTQ+ rights is dynamic, constantly shifting. For example, in 2024, Estonia became the first central European country to legalize marriage equality, and Barbados decriminalized same-sex relations in late 2022. Conversely, countries like Uganda and Russia have recently enacted severely restrictive anti-LGBTQ+ legislation. Knowing this context is not about creating a "no-go" list; it's about understanding the environment you're entering. The IGLA World database is an essential resource for this research.
Check Your Passport, Twice: This is one of the most common and heartbreaking travel mistakes. Over 170 countries require your passport to be valid for at least six months from your date of entry. Don't risk being denied boarding. Check your expiration date now.
Know Your Embassy: Before you go, save the address and phone number of your home country’s nearest embassy or consulate. This is your official point of contact in a serious emergency.
2. Your Digital Shield: Smart Tech & Online Safety
In the digital age, safety extends beyond the physical.
Defend Your Data with a VPN: A Virtual Private Network (VPN) is a must-have. According to a Kaspersky study, one in four public Wi-Fi hotspots are not secure, leaving your personal data—from bank details to private messages—vulnerable. A VPN encrypts your connection, creating a private tunnel for your data.
Create a "Home Base" Lifeline: Designate a trusted friend or family member who has a copy of your itinerary. Share your location with them via your phone for the duration of your trip. This simple act is a powerful form of community care and provides peace of mind for everyone.
Be Mindful of Your Digital Footprint: Consider being thoughtful about what you post in real-time, especially if you are in a location with more conservative norms. You can always share those incredible photos and stories later.
3. The Art of Awareness: Trusting Your Inner Wisdom
This is the skill of being present. It’s not about being paranoid; it’s about being connected to your environment and trusting the wisdom you already possess.
Honor Your Intuition: Our gut feeling is a highly evolved survival mechanism. If a situation, a person, or a place feels off, it probably is. Honor that feeling without question. Remove yourself from the situation. Cross the street, enter a shop, or duck into a cafe. You don’t need to justify it; you just need to trust yourself.
Walk with Purpose: Even when you’re lost, move with confidence. Keep your head up and be aware of your surroundings. Have the address of your accommodation saved offline in your phone and also written on a piece of paper tucked away safely.
Keep Valuables Secure: Be mindful of your belongings in crowded places. Consider a cross-body bag worn towards the front of your body or an anti-theft bag for extra security.
These practices create a container of safety that allows us to be even more free, more present, and more open to the world.
The ultimate expression of this is traveling in a community that inherently understands and prioritizes this safety. When you travel with a curated group, the research has been done, the destinations vetted, and the environment designed for our collective joy. It creates a space where you can let your guard down and simply be.
