Sweet Waters, Soft Landings brought a small group of Black queer travelers to a beachfront villa in Vieques for six days of swimming, healing, and connection. Each morning began in the pool, where lessons with Oshun Swim School met each person exactly where they were, gentle, reverent, and often deeply moving.
One afternoon opened into a workshop on the history of swimming across the diaspora, tracing threads from mermaid folklore to the cowrie shell divers of West Africa to the ancestors who found solace in rivers long before any of us stepped into this pool.
Chef Ray fed us daily with swim friendly meals built around fresh seafood pulled straight from local markets, and every plate felt like part of the healing. By the final morning, the water had done what it always does among us, it brought us closer together.
